TSU
students plan Chinese New Year celebration Feb. 11
|
International
students at Troy State University will present a Chinese New
Year celebration on Monday, Feb. 11, beginning at 7 p.m. in the
Trojan Center Ballrooms.
The celebration will highlight different aspects of Chinese
culture, including traditional food, song, and dance. Students will give brief
presentations about characteristics of the Chinese New Year, such as the lunar
calendar, zodiac signs, the different days of the festival, the Lion’s
Dance and the New Year Monster.
The traditional Lion’s Dance, dispels evil and brings
good luck. This dance is performed by two people. Another dance is the Dragon
Dance, which can include 20-30 people.
Tickets cost $8 for the general public and $4.50 for TSU students.
The deadline to purchase tickets is Friday, Feb. 8. For more information or for
tickets, call the Office of International Programs at 670-3335.
"Many of the Chinese students at TSU are exchange students,
and this celebration will enable them to share their culture and traditions with
others and will provide an opportunity for American students and students from
other countries to learn about the Chinese culture," said Debbie Davis, an international
student advisor at TSU. "Of course, the event is not just for TSU students. Anyone
in the community can attend."
The Chinese New Year, known in China as the Spring Festival,
is the oldest and most important festival in China. The date of the new year
is determined by the lunar calendar, and this year begins on Tuesday, Feb. 12.
The public holiday lasts for three days in China.
