TSU
plans new intramural sports complex
|
Troy
State University is planning a new complex that will allow for
expansion of its intramural sports programs, according to Shea
Phillips, Director of Student Services.
The 23-acre complex will be located on Academy Street in Troy,
next to the University’s Sorority Hill, Phillips said.
"This project will allow us to better serve students, as the
current space we are using restricts growth," Phillips said. "Providing opportunities
for recreation is a major responsibility for a residential college, and this
project will allow us to enhance a quality intramural sports program."
The plans will be implemented in phases, with the ultimate
goal of developing a multi-sports complex to include fields for softball, soccer
and flag football, sand volleyball courts and an outdoor basketball court.
Phillips said the first phase of the plan will consist of
clearing enough acreage and creating a large area to lay out fields for softball,
soccer and flag football. Phillips said the goal is to complete this phase in
time to accommodate the fall semester programs.
Currently, the acreage devoted to intramural sports can accommodate
two softball fields or three flag football fields. Soccer matches are played
at night on the marching band’s lighted practice field. The fields are
located between Collegedale and Pell avenues.
Phillips said the new fields will accommodate four flag football
fields or four softball fields. This will allow the intramural seasons to be
lengthened because scheduling will not be as "tight" with the addition of extra
fields.
"We will be able to allow our teams to play more games once
we get moved to the new complex," Phillips said. "I believe the students will
appreciate the changes."
The space currently used by intramural sports will be converted
into a new complex for intercollegiate track and soccer competition. The current
Jesse H. Colley Track Facility inside Memorial Stadium is being removed in a
stadium expansion project. A new field for the TSU women’s soccer team
will be created inside the track.
Phillips added that more than 2,200 students participate in
intramural sports at TSU, which offers men and women students the opportunity
to compete in flag football, softball, volleyball, basketball, golf, swimming,
soccer, tennis and track and field.
