| TSU student wins Miss Alabama preliminary pageant in Valley |

State University senior Kelly Hawkins was crowned the winner
of the Miss Lake Harding Pageant Saturday, Feb. 9 in Valley. Miss Hawkins, the reigning Miss Troy State University, won the talent and swimsuit categories. As Miss Lake Harding, Miss Hawkins will compete in the Miss Alabama Pageant June 12-17 in Birmingham. Since representing TSU in the 2001 Miss Alabama Pageant, Miss Hawkins has competed in several Miss Alabama preliminary pageants throughout Alabama. She was crowned first runner-up in the Greater Dothan, Miss Mobile and Miss Williams Station (Atmore) pageants. She has earned more than $8,000 in scholarship support in pageant competition. She is majoring in English at TSU and plans to attend law school following graduation. She is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Jack Hawkins, Jr. of Troy. The TSU senior has actively promoted her pageant platform of child abuse awareness and prevention through televised and personal appearances and radio public service announcements. She is a member of Prevent Child Abuse America. Miss Hawkins will relinquish her crown as Miss TSU at the conclusion of the 2002 Miss TSU pageant scheduled for Feb. 23 at the Claudia Crosby Theater. |
