Troy
State University’s Artist-in-Residence Nall Hollis has
won a major award from the Southeast Chapter of the Art Libraries
Society of North America for the book "Alabama Art" published
in 2000.
The society presented the 17th annual Mary Ellen Lopresti Award
to Hollis, known professionally as Nall, and to River City Publishing of Montgomery.
The Lopresti awards are given to recognize and encourage excellence in art publications
issued in the Southeast.
Art and architectural books, exhibition catalogs and serials
published during an individual calendar year are eligible for consideration.
Only publications from eight Southeast states, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands
are eligible for consideration.
The book showcased the work of the artists in the "Alabama
Art" movement, an award-winning art show that features the work—including
painting, photography, sculpture and engraving— of 13 people who found
their creative muse in Alabama.
"This project began as an attempt to share the great art of
Alabama with my friends and the art world on the French Riviera," Nall said.
The show is currently on display at Troy State University at
Dothan. Future sites for the exhibit include the Heritage Hall Museum in Talladega
and the Tennessee Valley Arts Center in Tuscumbia.
A Troy native, Nall studied at the prestigious L ‘Ecole
des Beaux Arts in Paris and later worked with famed artists Salvador Dali and
Lucien Coutaud. He is known in the United States and Europe for his paintings
that combine vivid realism and intricate details to convey psychological themes.
His works include collage paintings, black-and-white portraits and watercolor
landscapes.
Nall’s subjects have included Prince Albert of Monaco,
musician Ringo Starr and actress Barbara Bach. A versatile artist, he has created
a collection of fine porcelain commissioned by Limoges that is sold throughout
the United States and Europe. He is also a past recipient of a Fulbright Scholar
Grant. His work has been exhibited at museums and galleries in Paris, Nice and
Cannes, France; Cologne, Germany; Venice, Italy; Mexico City; and at the Smithsonian
Institute in Washington, D.C.
He has created a special scholarship to allow Troy State University
students to study at his studio in Vence. This is Nall’s second term as
artist-in-residence. He also taught at TSU during spring semester 2001.
