Freemon Hamilton Scholarship to be offered by TSU |
| The
family of the late Mary Freemon Hamilton of Luverne has announced
the sponsorship of a perpetual scholarship for Troy State University
students. The scholarships will be awarded annually to students from Crenshaw County majoring in early childhood education or elementary education. The award will be applied toward tuition. The University Scholarship Committee will select the recipients based upon academic standing and need. The initial scholarship award will be granted for the 2002-2003 academic year. March 31 is the scholarship application deadline. The scholarship will honor the memory of Mrs. Hamilton by the families of her sons, Douglas Hamilton of El Paso, Texas; and Tom Hamilton of Duluth, Ga.; her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The scholarship is also intended to honor Mrs. Hamilton’s profound contributions to her community as a longtime teacher in her private kindergarten and in her church, and to commemorate her deep sense of caring and love for children of all ages, according to members of her family. Mrs. Hamilton, who passed away in 1997, was widely known in Luverne and around Crenshaw County for many years as "Miss Mary." She was the wife of the late Eldred Hamilton. Mr. and Mrs. Hamilton were longtime residents of Luverne, having moved there in the early 1930s. Mrs. Hamilton is remembered in the Luverne area as the teacher and administrator of the Luverne Kindergarten during the 1950s, ’60s and early ’70s. "‘Miss Mary’ continues to be fondly remembered by her many students as their first teacher, a caring mentor who applied love, tender discipline, and Christian values to shape character, encourage wonder and achievement, and promote cheerful citizenship," members of her family said.
