Seminar
to improve education for the visually impaired set for
TSU
|
Two
leading national authorities on the education of the visually
impaired will lead a seminar Feb. 21-22 at Troy State University.
Tom Miller from the Perkins School for the Blind and Susan
Spungin, Vice President for education and international programs for the American
Foundation for the Blind, will serve as presenters at the seminar "Improving
Educational Services for the Visually Impaired."
The seminar is sponsored by the Claudia Crosby Institute on
Vision at TSU, the Southeast Alabama Regional Inservice Center at TSU, the Alabama
Department of Education State Improvement Grant and the Alabama Institute for
Deaf and Blind (AIDB). The seminar will be held at the Trojan Center on the TSU
campus.
Dr. Gaylen Pugh, Project Director, Blind Education Initiative
of the National Association of State Directors of Special Education, will serve
as facilitator for the seminar.
According to Janice Hawkins of the TSU College of Education
and one of the event’s organizers, the seminar will provide specialized
training for administrators and supervisors of teachers for the visually impaired.
"There is a critical need for this information in Alabama’s
schools, because not all visually impaired students are served in special schools
such as AIDB," she said. "Many visually impaired students are served in mainstream
classrooms by teachers who have not received specialized training in meeting
the needs of these students."
Others scheduled to participate in the conference include Mabrey
Whetstone, Director of the Alabama Department of Education, Special Education
Services, and Joe Busta, President of the Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind.
For more information regarding the seminar, contact the Southeast
Alabama Regional Inservice Center at 334-670-3594.
