Dr. Hamilton is new director of TSU master’s degree in nursing program

Dr. Bernita K. Hamilton has been named Director of the Master of Science in Nursing Program at Troy State University, according to Dr. Brenda Riley, Director of the School of Nursing.
"We believe Dr. Hamilton is the right person for the position because she is highly qualified, as her background includes professional practice and a solid academic background in both the classroom and in administration," Dr. Riley said. "She comes to us after earning her doctorate from a highly respected university, and we believe she is of the caliber to lead our MSN program to great things. She understands the service aspect of the profession and will provide outstanding leadership to our students and faculty."
Dr. Hamilton said she sees this as an opportunity to build on a record of academic achievement at TSU and also to enhance the nursing profession in southeast Alabama.
"I am excited about the opportunity to serve in this position and to be responsive to the needs of professionals in our area," Dr. Hamilton said. "Troy State University will look to establish partnerships with service providers in our area to enhance our programs and the health care of this region.
"We also want to seek opportunities to provide nursing services to under-served areas of Alabama," she said. "This will be a major area of focus for us."
Finding ways to attract people to the profession in the wake of nationwide nursing shortages is another primary goal, Dr. Hamilton said.
"We will become actively involved in promoting the profession to younger people, such as junior high school students," she said.
Dr. Hamilton, a native of Thomasville, received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Alabama-Birmingham before joining the TSU faculty as an assistant professor. She left TSU to pursue a Ph.D. in nursing from the Medical College of Georgia and teach at Georgia Southern University. She returned to the TSU faculty in 2000. She is a member of the American Nurses’ association, the National Association of School Nurses and Sigma Theta Tau, an international nursing honor society. She and her husband, Bob, live in Greenville with their children, Jennifer and Taylor.
