Clower
wins July McKinley Award at TSU
|
James
Clower, who has served Troy State University for almost 30 years,
is the winner of the Vergil Parks McKinley Award for July at
TSU.
Clower, Director of Radio and Television, was presented the
award by Dr. Jack Hawkins, Jr., Chancellor, at a ceremony July 16 in the Hawkins-Adams-Long
Hall of Honor.
The McKinley Award, the highest honor that TSU gives to a non-faculty
staff member, is presented monthly to an employee who has demonstrated outstanding
attitude, innovation and work ethic. The award was established by former Texaco
CEO John McKinley in honor of his father, Vergil Parks McKinley, who was a TSU
professor during the early 20th century and was key to the development of the
university’s athletic program. Award winners receive an engraved clock
and a $300 stipend.
Dr. Bill Flinn, Vice President for Technology, said Clower "personifies
TSU’s friendly one-student-at-a-time philosophy." He said Clower contributes
to the development of students in the Hall School of Journalism by teaching the
basics of television production.
Clower’s duties also include management of the Troy State
University Public Radio Network. He joined the radio and television staff in
1976 after working in University Photography.
Clower, a 1970 graduate of TSU, said he was honored to receive
the award.
"Since 1966, except for two years working in private business,
I have been a part of Troy State University, so I’m qualified to say TSU
is a great place to work," Clower said at the awards ceremony. "I’ll accept
this award on behalf of my staff, which does an outstanding job."
A native of Brundidge, Clower and his wife, Sandra, live in
Troy with their two sons, Matthew and Chase.
