State universities’ SGA leaders to attend conference at TSU
Troy State University will provide training for newly elected student government association officers from colleges and universities across Alabama July 12-13.
This is the sixth year TSU has held the statewide leadership retreat for SGA officers, according to Dr. Shirley Woodie, Director of the Institute for Leadership Development. TSU founded the retreat to bring the officers together for training and networking, Dr. Woodie said.
"We realized that many of these officers who were elected in the spring had no one to discuss their new responsibilities with," she said. "We include roundtables at each retreat so that the officers can discuss common problems."
The retreat also features addresses from professionals who were elected to SGA office during their college days, such as Lamar Higgins, former SGA president at TSU and current member of the university board of trustees.
Officers will also hear a presentation by Gordon Stone, executive director, Higher Education Partnership of Alabama.
Universities scheduled to participate to date are Troy State University, Samford University, University of North Alabama, University of Montevallo, University of Alabama-Birmingham, Auburn University-Montgomery and University of West Alabama. Other universities are expected to send officers as well, Dr. Woodie said.
