Michael Powell wins McKinley Award winner at TSU for June
Michael Powell, a mover for the Troy State University Physical Plant, is the winner of the Vergil Parks McKinley Award for June at TSU.
Powell received the award in a ceremony Friday, June 21 at the Hawkins-Adams-Long Hall of Honor. Dr. Jack Hawkins, Jr., Chancellor made the presentation.
The McKinley Award, the highest honor that TSU gives to a non-faculty staff member, is presented monthly to an employee who has demonstrated outstanding attitude, innovation and work ethic. The award was established by former Texaco CEO John McKinley in honor of his father, Vergil Parks McKinley, who was a TSU professor during the early 20th century and was key to the development of the university’s athletic program. Award winners receive an engraved clock and a $300 stipend.
Jim Wilhelm, assistant director of the Physical Plant, described Powell as "quiet doer" with a "can-do" attitude.
"He is always willing and able to do what he is asked by anyone," Wilhelm said. Wilhelm pointed out that Powell is a key contributor to major events at TSU, such as commencement and honors covocation.
Powell lives in Saco with his wife Jeanette and daughter, Priscilla. He is the son of James and Betty Powell of Troy.
