French
author, journalist plans book on TSU artist-in-residence
|
Fredric
Altmann, an author and journalist from Nice, France, will visit
Troy State University March 20-26 to began work on his newest
book, a look at the work of TSU artist-in-residence Nall Hollis.
Hollis, known professionally as Nall, is serving his second
semester as artist-in-residence at TSU. Altmann writes for major publications
in France, including the newspapers Nice Matin and Le Cigaro. He has also written
books on famous artists such as Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso.
A Troy native, Nall studied at the prestigious L 'Ecole des
Beaux Arts in Paris and later worked with famed artists Salvador Dali and Lucien
Coutaud.
He is known in the United States and Europe for his paintings
that combine vivid realism and intricate details to convey psychological themes.
His works include collage paintings, black-and-white portraits and watercolor
landscapes. Nall's subjects have included Prince Albert of Monaco, musician Ringo
Starr and actress Barbara Bach.
A versatile artist, he has created a collection of fine porcelain
commissioned by Limoges that is sold throughout the United States and Europe.
He is also a past recipient of a Fulbright Scholar Grant. Nall's work has been
exhibited at museums and galleries in Paris, Nice and Cannes, France; Cologne,
Germany; Venice, Italy; Mexico City; and at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington,
D.C. His most recent European exhibition, called "Couleurs and Dependances," was
held in Paris and sponsored by Christian Dior.
Nall was also instrumental in establishing an art scholarship
that provides study opportunities at his studio in Europe for Troy State University
students. Last spring, he held a gala auction in Birmingham to raise seed money
for the scholarship fund.
