Troy Children’s Chorus/Birmingham Children’s Touring Choir concert planned
TROY, Ala.--The Troy Children’s Chorus and the Birmingham Children’s Touring Choir will present a joint concert Friday, March 22, at 7 p.m. in the Hawkins-Adams-Long Hall of Honor on the Troy State University campus.
The concert is free and a reception will follow.
The Troy Children’s Chorus, now in its second year, is composed of boys and girls in grades three-eight, according to Dr. Catherine Allard, associate professor of music at TSU and director. They have performed at Troy State University, Troy Elementary School, downtown Troy and the Troy Music Study Club’s Founder’s Day concert. In addition to this concert, the Troy Children’s Chorus spring concert schedule includes Sigma Alpha Iota Province Weekend, the Jean Lake Festival and the TSU Spring Choral Festival.
The Birmingham Children’s Touring Choir, under the direction of Dr. Julie Skadsem, is one of four groups in the Birmingham Children’s Choir choral program. It consists of singers in grades six-eight who have previously sung in the Concert Choir. The Troy concert is the first stop in a tour that will take them to Tallahassee, Gainesville and Orlando, Fla., with a final performance at Walt Disney World.
A wide variety of music is planned for the concert, from a Hungarian folk-round, "The Promise of Spring," to the popular African song "Siyahamba," now sung in many churches as the hymn, "We are marching in the light of God." The groups will combine for two pieces, Mary Lynn Lightfoot’s "Celebrate with Jubilant Song" and an uplifting setting of the timely Quaker hymn, "How Can I Keep from Singing?," arranged by Ginger Littleton.
