Fleming named winner of TSU’s McKinley Award |
Troy
State University staff member Tommy Fleming is the recipient
of the Vergil Parks McKinley Outstanding Employee Award for March.
Fleming, who works in the recycling division of the TSU Physical
Plant, was presented the award during a March 20 ceremony in the Hawkins-Adams-Long
Hall of Honor on the TSU campus. Chancellor Jack Hawkins, Jr. presented the award.
The McKinley Award, the highest honor the university gives
to a non-faculty staff member, is presented monthly to an employee who has demonstrated
outstanding attitude, innovation and work ethic. The award was created by former
Texaco CEO John McKinley in honor of his father, Vergil Parks McKinley, who was
a TSU professor in the early 20th century and was key to the development of the
university’s athletics program. Award winners receive an engraved clock
and a $300 stipend.
Fleming, a resident of Brundidge, has been a member of the
university staff since 1987. As a member of the recycling and moving crews that
service offices campuswide, he comes into contact with much of the TSU community
and is a goodwill ambassador for the Physical Plant, said Jim Wilhelm, assistant
director.
“Tommy continually displays a cheery, pleasant disposition
and is very conscientious and dedicated to his duties,” Wilhelm said. “It’s
a pleasure and a privilege to work with him.
“Good things come to good people, and Tommy is very deserving
of this award,” he said.
Fleming said he was surprised to receive the award, adding
that it was “great to be recognized like this.”
“This is a great university, and this is the best job
I ever had,” he said. “I work with good people -- we’re just
like family at the Physical Plant.”
