Southeastern Symphony, leading violinist to be featured in TSU concert March 9
The Southeastern Symphony Orchestra, a 120-voice chorus and top violinist Karen Clarke will be featured when Troy State University plays host to a choral-orchestral concert on Saturday, March 9.
The event is set for 7:30 p.m. in the Claudia Crosby Theater, located on University Avenue on the TSU campus. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased at the door or through TSU's John M. Long School of Music. TSU students with valid identification will be admitted free of charge. Call (334) 670-3322 for ticket information.
The concert is sponsored by the Troy Arts Council and TSU, with support from the Alabama State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.
Clarke, concertmaster of the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra and a member of the music faculty at Florida State University, will be featured with the Southeastern Symphony Orchestra for a performance of a popular violin piece, Max Bruch's "Concerto No. 1 in G Minor," said Dr. William Denison, director of the John M. Long School of Music. Clarke, a graduate of the Peabody Conservatory and former member of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, has appeared as a soloist with the Buffalo Philharmonic, the North Carolina Symphony and orchestras throughout Florida.
The concert program will also bring 170 performers to the stage when the TSU Collegiate Singers and the Southeastern Chorale join the 50-piece Southeastern Symphony Orchestra for a presentation of sacred choruses from masterworks of great composers, Dr. Denison said.
The Dothan-based Southeastern Symphony Orchestra is conducted by its music director, Dr. Terre Johnson. The TSU Collegiate Singers are led by Paul McGahie, director of choral activities at TSU. Pat Vaughn serves as conductor of the Southeastern Chorale.
"This promises to be one of our top concerts this year," Dr. Denison said. "We invite everyone to enjoy this special musical event."
