competition |
Troy
State University student Misty Belyeu has been chosen to compete
with students from around the country for a prestigious scholarship
from the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Undergraduate Scholars Program.
A Troy resident, Belyeu is a junior majoring in education.
She was selected to represent TSU in the national competition by a faculty committee,
which solicited nominations from the university’s academic departments.
This year marks TSU’s first participation in the competition.
Belyeu will compete for one of 40 scholarships offered by the
Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Undergraduate Scholars Program for 2002-03. Winners
will receive up to $30,000 per year for the remainder of their undergraduate
careers. Scholarship recipients will be announced in July.
Belyeu is a member of national honor societies Phi Kappa Phi,
Omicron Delta Kappa and Gamma Beta Phi. She is the 2002-03 president of the TSU
chapter of Kappa Delta Pi, a national education honor society. She is a three-year
member of the TSU Chancellor’s List for maintaining a perfect 4.0 grade
point average. She is involved with the TSU-based Upward Bound program, serving
as an on-site tutor for high school students and as a summer program resident
assistant. She is also the 2002-03 president of the Latter Day Saint Student
Association at TSU.
Eligibility for the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Undergraduate
Scholars Program is limited to students from four-year colleges or universities
who have completed their freshman years of study. Nominees must have a record
of achievement as demonstrated by superior grades, academically rigorous courses
and participation in challenging extracurricular activities. Nominees must be
chosen by a campus committee or foundation representative.
Founded by the late media entrepreneur, sportsman and philanthropist,
the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation is a private foundation established to help promising
young people reach their potential through education.
