| TSU
student and Ramer resident chosen for top doctoral program
at Vanderbilt |
Troy
State University student Kimberly Norman will continue her study
of molecular biology in a prestigious doctoral program at Nashville’s
Vanderbilt University next fall.
Norman, a native and resident of Ramer, was recently accepted
in Vanderbilt’s Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Biomedical Sciences.
She will begin the Ph.D.-track program in August.
Norman’s acceptance in the program is a significant achievement
for TSU’s biology program, said Dr. Christi Magrath, assistant professor
of biological and environmental sciences. In 2000, Magrath won a grant from the
National Science Foundation to conduct genetics research at TSU. She noted that
the grant has enabled her to involve students, including Norman, in her research.
“Positions in this Ph.D. program are highly competitive,” Magrath
said. “I am truly honored to have Kimberly represent Troy State at Vanderbilt.”
A senior, Norman is a biology major with a concentration in
cell and molecular biology. She said she is looking forward to starting the doctoral
program and ultimately hopes to get involved in research and development with
a pharmaceutical company.
“Molecular biology is a fascinating field right now,
and I’m very excited about being accepted in the Vanderbilt program,” Norman
said. “Being able to work with Dr. Magrath and study at Troy State has
made a lot of great opportunities available to me.”
Norman has presented papers about her genetics research at
TSU at several conferences, most recently the 2002 Southeastern Regional Yeast
Meeting held in March in Gatlinburg, Tenn. and the 63rd annual meeting of the
Association of Southeastern Biologists held in April in Boone, N.C.
Norman is a member of Phi Kappa Phi and Mortar Board national
honor societies. She is past president of the TSU chapter of Beta Beta Beta,
a national biology honor society, and is past vice president of Alpha Epsilon
Delta, a pre-medical honor society. She was the 2001-02 Trojan Pride scholarship
winner and received the Torch Award as the outstanding student in the TSU Honors
Program in 2000-01. She is a member of the University Honors Alliance and the
University Honors Council and is a graduate of the TSU Honors Program.
Norman is a graduate of St. James High School in Montgomery.
She is the daughter of Robert and Gail Norman of Ramer.
