TSU begins new study-abroad opportunity in Vietnam
Troy State University students will get the opportunity to visit the sites of some of the most historic events of the 20th century during a five-week study-abroad program in Vietnam planned for this summer.
Dr. Harold Kaylor, Chair of the Department of English, will lead the program, which will include courses on world religions, literature and Southeast Asia history. Students can earn up to nine hours academic credit.
Although Troy State University operates campuses in nine other nations, mostly on military bases, and also sponsors exchange programs with universities in Europe, this is TSU’s first venture into Vietnam.
"We are making a real commitment to our students," Dr. Kaylor said. "This is a wonderful opportunity for them to step outside of the textbook and learn about a completely different culture."
Dr. Kaylor said The University of Dalat will serve as a partner for this program, but students will spend little time in the classroom.
"We want our students to learn by visiting the actual temples, mosques and other sites," he said. "That’s the purpose of the program."
Dr. Kaylor said the importance of Vietnam in the second half of the 20th century makes it a good choice for a study-abroad program. While he first visited the country as a member of the United States military during the Vietnam War, he had the opportunity to make return trips as a member of the faculty at the University of Northern Iowa.
Recently, Dr. Nguyen Huu Duc, the Rector of the University of Dalat, visited the Troy campus to finalize details for this inaugural program.
