Chanticleer to perform at TSU on Nov. 18

Chanticleer, the Grammy Award-winning male vocal ensemble, is scheduled to perform in Troy on Monday, Nov. 18, at 7:30 p.m. in the Claudia Crosby Theater on the Troy State University campus.
The concert is sponsored by the Troy Arts Council, the Alabama Council on the Arts, and the National Endowment of the Arts. Tickets for the performance are $20 for adults and $5 for students. They are available at all Troy Banks, WTBF Radio, Radio Shack and the John M. Long School of Music at TSU.
The ensemble consists of 12 male voices, ranging from countertenor to bass. The title of the program is "Our American Journey." It spans four centuries of music in North America and includes a variety of early Spanish-American music, Sacred Harp, familiar folk songs, spirituals and popular music.
Chanticleer has been praised by the New York Times for its "Precise, pure, and deeply felt singing," and by the Los Angeles Times for its "Luxurious perfection." This year, the Ensembles celebrates its 25th season with concerts across the United States, two European tours, and the release of its 25th compact disc.
In August, Hinshaw Music, an international choral music publisher, issued the Chanticleer Silver Jubilee Anthology of Choral Music. The ensemble’s catalog of two dozen recordings includes "Colors of Love," which won the Grammy Award for Best Small Ensemble Performance and the Contemporary A Cappella Recording Award for Best Classical Album.
Named for the "clear-singing" rooster in Geoffrey Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, Chanticleer was founded in 1978 by tenor Louis Botto, who sang with the group until 1989 and served Artistic Director until his death in 1997.
In 1999, Christine Bullin joined Chanticleer as President and General Director, leading both the artistic and administrative sides of the organization. Music Director Joseph Jennings joined the ensemble as a countertenor in 1983, and shortly thereafter assumed his current title. Countertenor Philip Wilder, who joined Chanticleer in 1990, also serves as Artistic Administrator and Director of Education.
