Saralene Hines wins TSU’s McKinley Award for October
Saralene Hines, secretary for the Aerospace Studies Department at Troy State University, is TSU’s Vergil Parks McKinley Outstanding Employee Award for October.
Hines, who has worked for TSU since August 1977, received the award last week during a ceremony in the Hawkins-Adams-Long Hall of Honor on the TSU campus. Dr. Jack Hawkins, Jr., Chancellor, presented the award.
The McKinley Award, the highest honor that TSU gives to a non-faculty staff member, is presented monthly to an employee who has demonstrated outstanding attitude, innovation and work ethic. The award was established by former Texaco CEO John McKinley in honor of his father, Vergil Parks McKinley, who was a TSU professor during the early 20th century and was key to the development of the university’s athletic program. Award winners receive an engraved clock and a $300 stipend.
Lt. Col. Steve Cooke, Chair of Aerospace Studies, described Hines as "efficient and effective," and said "she runs every program in her area to perfection.
"She has also taken it upon herself to learn Air Force ROTC entry requirements to aid in prescreening prospective AFROTC cadets," Cooke added.
Hines said receiving the McKinley Award is an honor.
"It means a lot to me," she said. "It’s a privilege to work for this university and the Air Force. I have enjoyed watching the university grow. We had about 3,000 students when I started and this year we have over 6,000 students."
She added that working with the students is the best part of her job. v"They bring me papers to look over and I’m always glad to help them," she said. "The students are the best part of my job."
Hines lives in Ariton with her husband, Jessie Ray.
