TSU
photographer wins McKinley Award for November
A man who has recorded some of the most significant
events in Troy State history through the camera’s lens was honored
Tuesday as the winner of the Vergil Parks McKinley Award for November.
Donald Norsworthy of Troy, Chief Photographer for the Office
of Creative Services for more than 23 years, was presented the award by Chancellor
Jack Hawkins Jr. in a ceremony at the Hawkins-Adams-Long Hall of Honor.
The McKinley Award, the highest honor that TSU gives to a non-faculty
staff member, is presented monthly to an employee who has demonstrated outstanding
attitude, innovation and work ethic. The award was established by former Texaco
CEO John McKinley in honor of his father, Vergil Parks McKinley, who was a TSU
professor during the early 20th century and was key to the development of the
university’s athletic program. Award winners receive an engraved clock
and a $300 stipend.
Joe Johnson, Director of Creative Services praised Norsworthy
for his positive attitude and innovative problem solving.
"His knowledge of his trade coupled with the experience and
expertise make his a valuable asset to the university," Johnson wrote in his
letter of nomination. Johnson also pointed out that Norsworthy has won photography
awards in regional and national competitions.
Norsworthy, a native of Georgiana, lives in Troy with his wife,
Becky, and their children Candace and Nick. He said winning the McKinley Award
is an honor, but a greater honor is the opportunity to build a career at TSU.
"This award is really a reflection of all the great people
I work with every day, not only in my department but across the campus," he said. "They
make it fun to come to work." |
