   University Police encourages seat-belt use
Troy State University Police will participate in a nationwide crackdown against seat-belt violators the week of Thanksgiving holidays, according to Chief Rod Anderson.
The program, called Operation ABC Mobilization, is joint effort of the U.S. military and more than 12,00 police departments around the country. During Operation ABC Mobilization, scheduled to begin Monday, Nov. 25 and end on Wednesday, Nov. 27, TSU Police will intensify enforcement by setting up checkpoints around campus from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. each day. Seat belt violators and drivers failing to restrain child passengers will be ticketed.
"Our first concern is for the safety of our students, because most of them will be driving home for the holidays," Anderson said. "We want them to be aware of the fact that seat belts can save lives."
Anderson added that accident rates for younger driver, particularly teenagers are twice that of older drivers and the risk of crashed for younger drivers is approximately four times that of older drivers, according to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
In addition, NHTSA data show that strict enforcement of seat-belt laws is the best way to get people to buckle up. Seat belt use in states that conduct high-visibility enforcement campaigns is 10 to 15 percent higher than in states that only conduct public education.
