TSU
sets record for new student enrollment
|
Troy
State University’s new student enrollment for fall semester
is the largest in school history and represents a 15 percent
increase over fall 2001, according to Buddy Starling, Dean of
Enrollment Management.
TSU enrolled 1,590 freshmen and transfer students for the fall,
Starling said, compared to 1,384 for fall 2001. Although overall enrollment compilations
have not been completed, current estimates for Troy campus enrollment are approximately
5,500 students for the fall term.
Starling attributes the increase to several factors, including
improved marketing efforts.
"I think our admissions staff is doing an outstanding job of
identifying potential students and then telling the Troy State University story," Starling
said. "And everything we’re doing from administration to student support
services to housing to dining services has allowed us to better position Troy
State University as a high-value university experience."
Starling said capital improvements made in recent years, such
as residence hall renovation and expansion and renovation of the student center
and dining hall are aiding marketing efforts.
There is another major, more visible, change that is also having
a positive impact on student recruitment, Starling said.
"You can’t discount the effect of our move to Division
I-A in football," he said. "The interest surrounding this move has increased
our visibility and name recognition enormously."
Starling also pointed out that this year marks the third consecutive
increase in new students, as a 10 percent increase was reported in 2000 and a
9 percent hike was reported for 2001.
