TSU
announces Wallace Malone Award for faculty
|
Troy
State University has established a special award designed to
reward faculty members for excellent job performance, according
to Dr. Jack Hawkins, Jr., Chancellor.
Called the "Wallace D. Malone, Jr., Distinguished Faculty Award," the
honor will be presented twice a year, Dr. Hawkins said. Wallace Malone, Chairman
of the Board and CEO of SouthTrust Corporation, served as a TSU trustee from
1975-1995.
"We continue to appreciate the outstanding leadership Mr. Malone
provided to our Board of Trustees for more than two decades. We are indebted
to him for allowing us to honor our faculty members in this special way," the
TSU Chancellor said. "Next to the students, the heart of our university is the
faculty. They deserve this recognition."
The award will first be presented in August 2003 at the Chancellor’s
annual address to faculty. The award will also be presented at the annual honors
convocation each spring. Any full-time faculty member from throughout The Troy
State University System is eligible to receive the award, which will consist
of a commemorative gift and a $1,500 cash prize from an endowment.
"This award will honor much more than outstanding classroom
performance, although that will be taken into consideration," Dr. Hawkins said. "It
will also place significant value on outstanding scholarly work such as publications,
research projects and grants."
Deans, department chairs or faculty may nominate candidates
for the award. A committee of administrators and faculty will determine the recipient.
The deadline for nominations for the first award is May 30, 2003.
