Angela Johnson wins TSU’s McKinley Award for September
Thirteen must be Angela Johnson’s lucky number, as the 13-year veteran of Troy State University’s financial aid staff received TSU’s Vergil Parks McKinley Outstanding Employee Award for September on Friday the 13th.
Johnson, who serves as Assistant Director of Financial Aid, received the award during a ceremony in the Hawkins-Adams-Long Hall of Honor on the TSU campus. Dr. Ed Roach, Vice-chancellor for Academics and Student Affairs, presented the award.
The McKinley Award, the highest honor that TSU gives to a non-faculty staff member, is presented monthly to an employee who has demonstrated outstanding attitude, innovation and work ethic. The award was established by former Texaco CEO John McKinley in honor of his father, Vergil Parks McKinley, who was a TSU professor during the early 20th century and was key to the development of the university’s athletic program. Award winners receive an engraved clock and a $300 stipend.
In his letter nominating Johnson, Vice President for Student Affairs John Schmidt said she makes "students feel at ease in a tension-filled environment." He pointed out that the vast majority of TSU students receive some form of financial aid.
"Angela is one of many campus unsung heroines whose positive attitude makes a difference in our students lives and for the life of this campus," Schmidt said.
Johnson, a Selma native, graduated from TSU in 1989, Troy State University Montgomery in 1992 and Jones School of Law in 1997. She lives in Troy with her husband, Ashley and their children, Andrew, 11, and Ashlyn, 6.
"I was extremely honored by Colonel Schmidt's nomination," Johnson said. "I truly felt the Trojan Pride."
