TSU
professor to be honored by alma mater
Troy State University Professor Dr. Diane Orlofsky
has been chosen to receive the 2003 Department of Music Outstanding Alumni
Award from Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio.
Dr. Orlofsky will receive the award at the WSU Student Honors
Recital and at a reception given by the College of Liberal Arts. She earned her
master’s degree in music education from WSU in 1982.
“Personally, this award means a great deal to me,” Dr.
Orlofsky said. “I had professors at Wright State who made a life-long impact
on me.”
Dr. Orlofsky, who earned a Ph.D. at Florida State University,
said she benefited in her doctoral program from the quality of education she
received at Wright State.
Dr. Orlofsky’s first book “Redefining Teacher Education:
The Theories of Jerome Bruner and the Practice of Training Teachers,” was
published last year by Peter Lang Publishing of New York as part of its “Rethinking
Childhood” series. Dr. Orlofsky said the late Martha Wurtz, a member of
the WSU faculty, was instrumental in the early research for this book.
During her visit to Dayton to receive the award, Dr. Orlofsky
will also deliver a lecture to music education students at Wright State.
Dr. Diane Orlofsky is the author of numerous articles in professional
journals on teacher education and music education. Dr. Orlofsky has won several
teaching awards, including the Ingalls Award for Teaching Excellence presented
annually by Troy State University. She was named an American Fellow by the American
Association of University Women for her work on the application of Jerome Bruner’s
writings to the field of teacher education. Dr. Orlofsky received her bachelor’s
degree from Cedarville (Ohio) College, now Cedarville University.
She and her husband, Michael, a member of the English faculty
at TSU, live in Troy with their two children.
