TSU graduate Hawkins to unveil resource manual on child abuse, neglect
A Troy State University graduate will discuss the growing epidemic of child abuse in Alabama and unveil a manual to assist educators, caregivers and parents in identifying and responding to abuse and neglect during a Thursday, April 17 news conference. The news conference, held to commemorate Child Abuse Awareness Month, will take place at the Alabama Statehouse Joint Briefing Room in Montgomery at 11:30 a.m., Thursday.
Kelly Hawkins, the reigning Miss Mobile and a staunch advocate for children and families, will unveil the “2003 Educators Resource Manual on Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention,” which is a joint venture of Troy State University and the Children’s Trust Fund of Alabama. The manual will be distributed to Alabama counselors and caregivers.
Ms. Hawkins, who will represent Mobile in the Miss Alabama Pageant this June, graduated from TSU in December 2002 with a bachelor’s degree in English and plans to attend law school.
The daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Jack Hawkins Jr. of Troy, Ms. Hawkins has been active on behalf of several child abuse prevention programs and is playing a major role in the proposal and adoption of HB262: the Mandatory Clergy Reporting Bill, which has just cleared a Senate Committee.
