Myrtle Wingard wins McKinley Award at Troy State University
Myrtle Wingard, a member of the Troy State University housekeeping staff for close to 30 years, is the winner of the Vergil Parks McKinley Award for April at TSU.
Wingard received the award in a ceremony Wednesday, April 23, at the Hawkins-Adams-Long Hall of Honor. Dr. Jack Hawkins Jr., chancellor, presented the award to Wingard, who was nominated by her supervisor, Jimmy D. Reynolds.
The McKinley Award, the highest honor that TSU gives to a non-faculty staff member, is presented monthly to an employee who has demonstrated outstanding attitude, innovation and work ethic. The award was established by former Texaco CEO John McKinley in honor of his father, Vergil Parks McKinley, who was a TSU professor during the early 20th century and was key to the development of the university’s athletic program. Award winners receive an engraved clock and a $300 stipend.
The letter of nomination described Wingard as the “perfect example of a person who is living a Christian life on her job and at home.”
Reynolds further described Wingard as a dedicated, hard-working employee who always displays a positive attitude. “Mrs. Wingard is a great asset to Troy State University and to Sodexho,” Reynolds said in his nomination letter. “She is one of the best employees that we have.”
Wingard said receiving the McKinley Award was a great honor. “The recognition for the job I’ve done is the best part of it. I have put in a lot of years here at Troy State. I have always worked hard to try to help keep the university clean and attractive to visitors who might be looking for a school to attend.”
Wingard lives in Troy with her husband Jake. The couple has three grown children, Sanford Wingard, Sharon Bridges and Christopher Wingard.
