TSU
to sponsor program on HUBZone in Dothan Aug. 28
Federal government contractors may be able to benefit
from of a new federal initiative called the HUBZone (Historically Underutilized
Business Zone) Empowerment Contracting Program, which will be explained
in a special program Aug. 28 sponsored by the Small Business Development
Center at Troy State University.
The two-hour program will begin at 1:30 p.m. at Troy State
University Dothan.
The program will feature representatives from the U.S. Small
Business Administration (SBA) District Office in Birmingham. In addition, Linda
Hammer, owner of a Slocomb-based HUBZone certified business, Hammer LGC, Inc.,
will also provide insight into the certification process and discuss what the
HUBZone certification has meant to her business.
The HUBZone program stimulates economic development and creates
jobs in urban and rural communities by providing federal contracting preferences
to small businesses. These preferences go to small businesses that obtain HUBZone
certification in part by employing staff that live in a HUBZone. The company
must also maintain a “principal office” in one of these specially
designated areas. Some of the areas in Southeast Alabama that are qualified HUBZones
are Butler, Covington, Crenshaw, Geneva, and Pike counties as well as parts of
Dale and Houston counties.
The program will also cover special programs in government
contracting including the 8(a) Business Development Program, Small & Disadvantaged
Business certification and PRO-Net.
There is no charge for this seminar. To register call the TSU-SBDC
at 334-670-3771.
