TSU music faculty members to direct community orchestra
Dr. James and Ginger Zingara, members of the faculty of Troy State University’s John M Long School of Music, have been appointed music directors of the Tri-State Community Orchestra based in Dothan.
The group was founded in 1995 and consists of 55 volunteer string, brass, woodwind and percussion players of all abilities, backgrounds and experience levels. Membership includes performers from Alabama, Florida and Georgia
The orchestra performs three-five times a year including a holiday season concert in December, a Valentines Day concert and a spring orchestral showcase.
The American Composer’s Forum recently named the TCO as part of its Continental Harmony Program, which sponsors a composer-in-residence program throughout the country. The grant will allow the TCO to host a composer who will live in Dothan for one year who will write a piece of music in celebration of the community.
The TCO is one of only five groups to be chosen for this program in the nation.
James Zingara, who joined the TSU faculty in 1998, received his doctorate from the University of Illinois, his master’s degree from East Carolina University and his bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Lacrosse. Ginger Zingara, who joined the TSU faculty full time in 2003, received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from TSU. The Zingaras are the hosts of a 30-minute program on the Troy State University public radio network called “Band World.”
