‘Amahl and the Night Visitors' to be Performed December 19-21
The Troy State University Opera Ensemble and the Troy Council of the Arts and Humanities will present “Amahl and the Night Visitors” on Dec. 19-21.
The one-act opera is directed by Catherine Allard, professor of music at TSU, and will be performed at Bush Memorial Baptist Church located on George Wallace Drive. There is no charge for attendance.
TSU students and members of the community will collaborate to perform the hour-long production.
The opera was written by Gian Carlo Menotti for television in 1951 and is about a poor and lame young boy and his mother who are visited by three kings on their way to find the baby Jesus. Along the way, the boy encounters a heart-warming miracle.
The young boy is played by 11-year-old Anna Orlofsky of Troy and the mother of the boy is portrayed by Valerie Enchelmeyer of Troy. TSU student Rob McFarland of Wilmington, Del. and Kirby Sanders of Troy play the roles of King Melchior and King Balthazar. Floyd Shackelford of Troy plays King Kasper. TSU graduate student Tommy Newman of Hawkinsville, Ga., portrays the page.
Other TSU students and members of the community are in the chorus of shepherds and villagers.
