‘Amahl' to have community flavor
    "Amahl and the Night Visitors ,” a Christmas opera by Gian-Carlo Menotti, will be performed Friday and Saturday, Dec. 19 and 20 at Bush Memorial Baptist Church in Troy is truly a community production, according to Dr. Catherine Allard , director, who is also a professor of music at Troy State University.
    Admission is free, but please call 334-566-4141 to reserve your seat.
    “Amahl” is a joint venture of the TSU Opera Ensemble and the Troy Arts Council. Troy Elementary School student Anna Orlofsky, a member of First Baptist Church in Troy , will sing the part of Amahl, a lame child who meets the three wise men on their way to visit the new-born Christ child and learns a vital lesson about love and the spirit of giving.
    Valerie Enchelmayer, also a member of First Baptist Church , will play Amahl's mother. TSU senior music major Rob McFarland of Wilmington, Del., will be joined by Kirby Sanders and Floyd Shackelford, both from Brundidge, as the three Magi. Sanders is the former choir director of Salem Baptist Church and Shackelford sings with the Bush Memorial choir. Rounding out the named cast is TSU senior music major, Tommy Newman from Hawkinsville , Ga. , who is also music director at First Methodist Church in Elba .
    “There is also a lively chorus of shepherds and shepherdesses drawn from the university and local churches,” Dr. Allard said. “Please join us this weekend.”
