TSU students get athletic training scholarships
Two Troy State University students majoring in athletic training have received prestigious scholarships for graduate study, according to John Anderson, Program Director for the Department of Athletic Training Education.
Stacey Stallings, a senior from Andalusia, received a $5,000 Jerry Rhea Scholarship from the Southeastern Athletic Trainer's Association (SEATA). The scholarship honors the former trainer for Atlanta Falcons of the NFL and a National Athletic Trainer's Association Hall of Fame member.
Stallings will receive the Rhea Scholarship at the annual SEATA meeting in March.
Kelsey McLemore, a senior from Mobile, is the recipient of a $1,000 scholarship from the American Sports Medicine Institute (ASMI). Based in Birmingham, ASMI's mission is to improve the understanding, prevention, and treatment of sports-related injuries through research and education. McLemore received the scholarship at a ceremony this week in Birmingham.
Anderson said the scholarships are more than a point of pride for his department.
“This shows the caliber of students we attract,” Anderson said. “Both students have grade point averages higher than a 3.6 (on a 4.0 scale). They are going to be excellent trainers.”
Anderson pointed out that Stallings' and McLemore's honors are the latest in a long line for the 10-year-old TSU program.
“Over the past 10 years, we have had 80 students majoring in athletic training receive approximately $4.1 million in scholarships and fellowships, “Anderson said.
TSU graduates have served as athletic trainers for numerous college and professional athletic programs, including the New York Yankees' minor-league system, the Tampa Bay Devil Rays' system and the University of Connecticut women's basketball team, as well as numerous orthopedic clinics and sports medicine centers.
