   TSU 2003 Brass Symposium set for Feb. 28 and March 1
   The 2003 Brass Symposium at Troy State University, highlighted by the fifth annual Festival of Brass concert, is scheduled from Friday, Feb. 28 through Saturday, March 1.
   The symposium, which consists of clinics, activities and concerts, is free and open to the public.
   The Festival of Brass concert is set for Saturday, March 1 at 7:30 p.m. in the Claudia Crosby Theater. This concert will feature clinician solos; TSU Trumpet and Low Brass Ensembles; high school honors ensembles; the Southeastern Symphony Brass section, conducted by Ginger Zingara, and The Symposium Mass Finale, featuring more than 60 performers.
   The clinicians will be Dr. Michael Ewald, Professor of Trumpet, University of Illinois; Dr. Stacy Baker, Professor of Tuba, Morehead State University; Dr. James Zingara, TSU Professor of Trumpet; Mark Walker, TSU Professor of Low Brass and Assistant Director of Bands; and Ginger Zingara, TSU Instructor of Music and Associate Conductor of the Southeastern Symphony.

   Other events for the weekend are:
   Friday, Feb. 28 at 8 p.m.: Faculty Recital in the Hawkins-Adams-Long Hall of Honor.

   Saturday, March 1 at 11 a.m.: High school Solo Brass Competition Finals
   The Symposium is sponsored by the Troy City Council for the Arts and Humanities and the TSU Long School of Music.


   Short profiles of principal clinicians.

   Dr. Michael Ewald
   Michael Ewald is a graduate of California State University at Northridge where he received his B.A. and M.M degrees. He received his D.M.A. at the University of Southern California.
   Dr. Ewald was a soloist in a number of orchestras and bands across the country and at many music festivals.
   He serves as principal trumpet in the Champaign-Urbana Symphony, Chicago Chamber Brass, Illinois Symphony Orchestra, Illinois Chamber Orchestra, and Sinfonia da Camera.

   Dr. Stacy Baker
   Stacy Baker is the Associate Professor of Music-Tuba/Euphonium at Morehead State University in Morehead, Ky.
   She is a graduate of the University of Michigan where she received her M.M. and B.M. degrees. She received her D.M.A. in performance and literature with highest honors from the University of Illinois.
   She has appeared as a featured soloist at many tuba/euphonium conferences. As a member of the JUNCTION tuba/euphonium quartet, the Monarch Brass Ensemble, the Lexington Brass Band, and the Timbre Brass Quintet, she has toured and recorded throughout the United States and Europe.

   Dr. James Zingara
   Dr. James Zingara is the Assistant Professor of trumpet at Troy State University. At TSU Dr. Zingara teaches applied trumpet, brass methods, music theory, conducts the TSU Trumpet Ensemble, serves as coordinator of Applied Instruction and is Associate Conductor of the Chamber Winds.
   He holds degrees from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, East Carolina University and has recently received his D.M.A. in trumpet performance from the University of Illinois.
   Dr. Zingara represents Edwards Trumpets as a performing artist/clinician and is principal trumpet of the Southeastern Symphony and co-principal trumpet of the Northwest Florida Symphony.

   Mark Walker
   Mark Walker is the Assistant Director of Bands and Assistant Professor of Music at Troy State University. He assists the Sound of the South Marching Band, teaches low brass, serves as Associate Conductor of the TSU Chamber Winds and directs the TSU Athletic Pep Bands.
   In addition to his involvement at TSU, Mr. Walker serves as the Executive Director of the Middle School Southeastern United States Band Clinic, and is the director of the "Sound of the South" Summer Music Camp and Director’s Clinic.
