Professor to speak on Korean poetry on March 4
Dr. Sung-II Lee, Troy State University’s
2002-2003 Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence, will deliver an informal
presentation on Korean poetry and its English translations on
Tuesday, March 4.
The event will take place on the TSU campus in the Hawkins-Adams-Long
Hall of Honor at 1 p.m. and is open to the public. Dr. Lee will also be available
to discuss and autograph copies of his work at a reception following the event.
Admission is free.
Dr. Lee is a professor of English at Yonsei University in Seoul,
Korea and is a noted medieval scholar, specializing in Old- and Middle-English
Literature, as well as in works from the English Renaissance. Since graduating
from Texas Tech University in 1980 with a doctorate in philosophy, Dr. Lee has
published numerous scholarly papers and has received several awards for his translations
of Korean works.
He is also the author of two books, one containing translations
of classical Korean poetry and the other focusing on more modern Korean selections.
His current project, the translation of the classic warrior tale "Beowulf" from
old English into contemporary English verse, has drawn interest from medieval
societies worldwide.
As part of his Fulbright responsibilities, Dr. Lee teaches
classes on world literature, poetry and in senior seminar topics. He said his
goal is to make students more aware of the universal nature of literature, and
to appreciate it for its beauty more than semantics.
"I always encourage my students to read the text with naked
eyes and open hearts; all readers should have a face-to-face encounter with their
literature and its writers," Dr. Lee said.
