TSU flag-raising ceremony to salute international students

Flags from 10 foreign countries will be hoisted on the Troy State University campus Wednesday, Feb. 26, to dedicate a new flag plaza at Pace Hall/Rotary International Living and Learning Center.
The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 11:15 a.m., with William H. Ingram, senior economic development representative for the Alabama Development Office, as guest speaker.
Since 1991, Ingram has been responsible for recruiting U.S. and Asian countries to Alabama for industrial development. He has located and assisted companies from Japan, Korea, Indonesia and Singapore in the automotive, aerospace, chemical and electronics industries.
Representatives from universities in China, who are partners with TSU in the 1-2-1 Program, will also attend the ceremony. The program, officially called the 1-2-1 Sino-American Educational Strategies Program, allows students from partner Chinese universities to study their first year in China, spend their sophomore and junior years in Troy and then return home to China to complete their degree.
Universities to be represented at the ceremony are the China Center for International Education Exchange, Harbin University of Science and Technology, Sichuan Normal University, the North China Institute of Water Conservancy and Hydroelectric Power and Suzhou University.
The representatives from the Chinese universities will be officially welcomed at a ceremony scheduled Wednesday morning at 9:15 at the Hawkins-Adams-Long Hall of Honor.
The flag plaza will pay tribute to Troy State University’s emphasis on international education, as students from more than 60 countries attend TSU. The flags will represent the top-10 country of origin nations of TSU students. The top 10 nations, based on fall enrollment data, are China, India, Turkey, South Korea, Nigeria, Nepal, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Japan and Australia.
