New TSU e-mail system to provide each student with personal address
Troy State University is upgrading its e-mail system in an effort to improve service to students, faculty and staff, according to Greg Price, Director of Information Technology Management.
The new system will house more than 5,000 initial users. Student technology fees will help pay for the new system.
"All TSU students will automatically have an e-mail address created through this system," Price said. "This fosters the ability for campus-wide collaboration through e-mail."
The new system is similar to commonly available on-line personal web services such as Hotmail or Yahoo, Price said. Students will have 25 megabytes of space and a five-megabyte attachment limitation. Other features of the new system are the ability to forward TSU e-mail to an outside service, ability to retrieve outside e-mail and on-line account management. Faculty and staff will enjoy these same services and will have a 50-megabyte limit. Current TSU employee e-mail addresses will convert to the new system.
John Schmidt, Vice President for Student Affairs, said the new e-mail system is another example of TSU’s commitment to excellent student service.
"We have believed from the beginning that it’s important to have the capability to link the entire university community electronically," Schmidt said. "That’s why we have wired every room in every residence hall on campus for internet access."
The new e-mail system will become the official method of notification for various academic and administrative purposes, such as emergency updates, communication with faculty members and distribution of financial aid information.
Schmidt said the spring semester will be a trial period for the new system. Final policies and procedures will be developed during this time and will be ready for fall semester 2003.
