Dual exhibit features TSU student photography, art of Joseph Whitt
A dual exhibition featuring the works of Troy State University photography students and the drawings and paintings of artist Joseph Whitt is now on display at the TSU Malone Gallery of Art.
A reception for the photographic portion of the exhibit will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb.13, in the Malone Gallery. Students will be on hand to discuss their work, along with TSU associate professor of photography Bob Joslin. The gallery will host a separate closing-day reception and lecture for Joseph Whitt on Friday, Feb. 28, from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Both events are open to the public and are free of charge. The dual exhibit will continue at the gallery through February. The Malone Gallery is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. For additional information, call (334) 670-3391.
Included in the photographic collection are the specialized works of eighteen advanced photography students, under the direction of Joslin, from the Fall 2002 Studio III and IV classes. The exhibit displays their best examples of portraiture, fashion photography and nature photos in both color and black-and-white prints.
According to Jerry Johnson, professor and chairman of the Department of Art and Design, the degree of talent displayed in the students’ work is comparable to that of professionals.
"This display shows quite literally our student’s ability to produce professional caliber work," says Johnson. "The increased rigor of all art and design programs are paying great dividends to our students and to our university."
Whitt, a 1998 honors graduate from the Rhode Island School of Design, is an adjunct professor in the Department of Fine Arts at Middle Tennessee University. His work is currently on display in both solo and group exhibits throughout the southeast. In addition to his art, Whitt is a writer and a lecturer on fine art topics and is an active member of the College Art Association, the Southeastern College Art Conference and the American Culture Association.
Students whose work will be on display are: Susan Chinberg, Joseph Pullen and Brian Smith of Troy; Elizabeth Brackin, David Brown and Kristen Hughes of Dothan; Heather Smith of Webb; Hope Fussell of Montgomery; Steven Wambles of Ramer; Lana Moorer of Fort Deposit; Andrea Wimbley of Enterprise; Jayne Richards of Daleville; Steven Williams of Ozark, David Noble of Alabaster, Allison Bailey-Hardy of Maylene,
Elizabeth Lipscomb of Bon Secour; Karl Bryant of Phenix City; Casey Williamson of Andalusia.
