TSU to hold summer commencement Aug. 8
Troy State University will hold summer commencement on Friday, Aug. 8, with Provost Fred Davis, TSU’s chief academic officer, scheduled to deliver the keynote address.
The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. at Sartain Hall on the TSU campus. More than 200 students from eight U.S. states and 13 foreign nations are scheduled to receive diplomas, according to Tamara Jones, acting registrar. One hundred and thirty baccalaureate degrees and 73 master’s degrees are scheduled to be awarded.
Davis joined TSU as an English professor in 1970 and served as chairman of the department of English from 1971-1985. He later worked as assistant to the provost and associate provost before being named vice provost in fall 2000 and provost in 2001. As provost, Davis is responsible for faculty recruitment, selection and appointment and oversees faculty tenure and promotion reviews.
A native of Calvert, Texas, Davis received bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Georgia. Davis has published a number of essays, articles, reviews and poems in a variety of publications. He has served as a member of several accreditation committees for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools’ Commission on Colleges. His honors include membership in Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi national honor societies and the Outstanding Educators of America. He also served more than 25 years as TSU’s faculty athletics representative to the NCAA.
Davis will retire as provost following the fall semester.
