   TSU graduate wins Miss Homewood Area title
   Kelly Hawkins of Troy was crowned the winner of the Miss Homewood Area pageant, a Miss Alabama Pageant preliminary event, held Friday night at Homewood High School
   Miss Hawkins, a December 2002 graduate of TSU, was one of 20 contestants in the Miss Homewood Area Pageant. She won first place in the interview, swimsuit and community service portions of the competition, and her talent, a lyrical ballet performance, tied for first place. Miss Hawkins won prizes and scholarships totaling $9,400.
   Miss Hawkins, the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Jack Hawkins, Jr. of Troy, will represent Homewood in the 2004 Miss Alabama Pageant in June. This will be her fourth trip to the Miss Alabama competition, as she won the title of Miss Troy State University in 2001, the title of Miss Lake Harding in 2002 and the Miss Mobile title in 2003. She was named first runner-up in the 2002 Miss Alabama Pageant and was a top 10 finalist in the 2003 state pageant.
   She has been active in her pageant platform area of child abuse prevention, serving as a spokesperson for the Alabama Children’s Trust Fund. She was also successful is advocating the passage of a bill in the Alabama Legislature that add members of the clergy to the list of those who must report known or suspected child abuse or neglect. The bill became law during the most recent legislative session.
