TSU students, visiting professor to create sculpture
Troy State University students and faculty will team up with a visiting professor to create a special sculpture to be exhibited at the Wallace Malone Hall of Fine Arts on the TSU campus.
Jerry Johnson, Chair of the Department of Art and Design, said Montgomery native Janet Nolan will visit TSU June 16-19 to collaborate with TSU students in creating this sculpture.
Nolan, who lives in New York, studied art at Auburn University and Georgia State University. Her works are commissioned across the country from such institutions as New York’s Museum of Modern Art, Harvard University and the Von Liebig Art Center. Her sculptures are assemblages of everyday objects that evolve into natural forms such at vines, webs or cocoons. Works range in size from one foot to 100 feet.
Johnson said the highlight of the week will be an artist’s lecture scheduled for Thursday, June 19, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Malone Gallery at TSU. The public is invited to attend.
“The students, under the direction of Ms. Nolan, will begin creating a three-dimensional installation piece created from objects found in this geographic region,” Johnson said. “Ms. Nolan believes in using objects that can be recycled.”
Nolan will direct the students for the first week, then associate professors Pam Allen and Sergei Shillabeer will lead the students throughout the remainder of the summer term.
For more information about the project or the artist’s lecture, please contact the Department of Art and Design at 334-670-3391 or e-mail artdesign@troy.edu.
