Kelly Hawkins of Troy, a Troy State University graduate and reigning Miss Mobile, received the Mobile YWCA’s “College Woman of Achievement Award” at a luncheon Thursday, March 27 at the Mobile Convention Center.
Ms. Hawkins, who will represent Mobile in the Miss Alabama Pageant this June, won the award for her efforts to raise awareness of the need for child abuse prevention, according to Chuck Steelman, Director of the Miss Mobile Scholarship Pageant.
Steelman said Ms. Hawkins’ has been active on behalf of several area child abuse prevention programs, including the Child Abuse Center, Care House in Baldwin County, Penelope House, the Exchange Club’s Family Center and the Civitan Club’s Domestic Violence Awareness.
The “College Woman of Achievement Award” is presented annually to a college senior or recent graduate for their community-service efforts. Ms. Hawkins graduated from TSU in December 2002 with a bachelor’s degree in English. Her future plans include attending law school.
Ms. Hawkins, the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Jack Hawkins, Jr. of Troy, will represent Mobile in the 2003 Miss Alabama Pageant in June. This will be her third trip to the Miss Alabama competition, as she won the title of Miss Troy State University in 2001 and the title of Miss Lake Harding in 2002.
