TSU alumna uses pageant platform to aid Children’s Trust Fund
A Troy State University graduate who will compete in the Miss Alabama Pageant this spring is helping a state agency spread the word about child abuse prevention.
Kelly Hawkins of Troy, who is the reigning Miss Mobile and a former Miss Troy State University, is working with the Children’s Trust Fund on several major projects, according to Marian Loftin, Executive Director. Ms. Hawkins, who graduated from TSU in December, has adopted child abuse prevention as her pageant platform.
"We are thrilled to have Kelly involved with the work of the Children’s Trust Fund," Ms. Loftin said.
The Children’s Trust Fund was established by the Alabama Legislature in 1983 to reduce the incidence of child abuse and neglect by supporting community-based prevention programs. It is the only state agency charged with the prevention of child abuse.    Ms. Hawkins will serve as a spokesperson in several television public service announcements, Ms. Loftin said, and she will also narrate a seven-minute videotape designed to provide an overview of the work of the Children’s Trust Fund.
Ms. Hawkins, the daughter Dr. and Mrs. Jack Hawkins, Jr. of Troy, will represent Mobile in the 2003 Miss Alabama Pageant in June. This will be her third trip to the Miss Alabama competition, as she won the title of Miss Troy State University in 2001 and the title of Miss Lake Harding in 2002. She was named fist runner-up in the 2002 Miss Alabama Pageant.
