Harrell McKinney to receive special award at TSU

Harrel McKinney of Montgomery will be honored Saturday, March 15, with Troy State University’s fourth Distinguished Leadership Award.

McKinney, a 1962 graduate of TSU, will receive the award from Dr. Jack Hawkins, Jr., Chancellor, at an awards banquet to be held in the Hawkins-Adams beginning at 6 p.m.

The banquet is held in conjunction with the third annual Alumni, Parents and Friends/ St. Patrick’s Day celebration at TSU. Tickets for the banquet are $20 each.

The Distinguished Leadership Award was created to recognize the lifetime achievements of TSU alumni and friends who have distinguished themselves through exemplary work, philanthropy, leadership and service to their profession, community and alma mater.

McKinney is the Director of the McKinney Family Partnership. He was the Pathology Laboratory Manager in Montgomery from 1962-1972. Then in 1972 he founded the Alabama Reference Laboratories, Inc., and was the General Manager from 1972-1995.

He established the Harrel McKinney Medical Technology Scholarship at Troy State University for the purpose of providing a medical technology scholarship. He is also a trustee of the Troy State University Foundation.

McKinney is also a trustee of the Alabama Baptist Children’s Homes and Family Ministries and Lakeview Baptist Church Relocation Committee as Chairman and Deacon. He has served on the board of directors for the Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce and the Montgomery Committee of 100. In 1993, TSU presented McKinney with the honorary doctorate of laws.

A native of Esto, Fla., McKinney is a graduate of Geneva County High School in Hartford. He is married to the former Peggy Jean Chalker of Clayhatchee, and they have three children, Felicia Jean, Timothy Harrel and Nicole Marie.
