Girls
State returning to TSU for fourth year
Troy State University will play host to approximately
325 high school juniors from across Alabama as Girls State returns to
the TSU campus for the fourth consecutive year June 1-6.
Sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary, Girls State teaches
young women about civics and leadership. Participants are divided into cities
and counties and elect local officials, according to Lee Sellers of Montgomery,
director of this year’s session. The students also serve as senators and
representatives, debating bills and proposing solutions to current problems facing
elected officials.
The highlight of the week is the election of the governor of
Girls State and other constitutional officers, Sellers said. She added that students
benefit from hearing prominent speakers such as elected officials and business
leaders.
Speakers scheduled for this year’s session include Lt.
Gov. Lucy Baxley, Attorney General Bill Pryor, Alabama Supreme Court Justice
Jean Brown and Criminal Appeals Court Judge Sue Bell Cobb. The culmination of
the week’s events takes place in Montgomery, where the delegates are scheduled
to meet with Gov. Bob Riley and tour the major sites in the State Capitol.
In 2000, TSU became only the second college or university to
play host to Girls State in its more than 50-year history.
Dr. Jack Hawkins, Jr., Chancellor, said hosting Girls State
has become one of the highlights of TSU’s year.
“Troy State University and Girls State share the mission
of developing the next generation of Alabama’s leaders,” Dr. Hawkins
said. “We are pleased that they will be back on campus this spring.”
