Schmidt named Vice Chancellor of Student Services at TSU
John W. Schmidt has been named Vice Chancellor for Student Services at Troy State University.
In this new appointment, Schmidt, who is currently Vice President for Student Affairs for the campus in Troy, will oversee student services operations across the university system.
He joined the TSU administration in 1994 as Executive Assistant to the Chancellor and served as Vice President for Advancement before being named to the student affairs post in 1999.
“Our students are the real winners in this announcement,” Chancellor Jack Hawkins, Jr. said. “John Schmidt is a strong advocate for our students and is dedicated to providing excellent service to them. This is the right move at the right time for Troy State University.”
Schmidt, a native of Birmingham, earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Montevallo and his master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin. He is currently completing requirements for a doctorate in education from Nova Southeastern University.
Before joining the TSU administration, Schmidt served 25 years in the United States Marine Corps, rising to the rank of colonel. He is chairman of the USS Alabama Battleship Commission, a past president of the Troy Rotary Club and the Pike County Chamber of Commerce and a member of St. Martin’s Catholic Church. He and his wife, the former Vickie Vandergrift of Birmingham, have three sons. Chris and Tim are graduates of Troy State University, while Steve is currently a student at TSU.
“I welcome the new challenge and associated responsibilities in representing our students here in Alabama and around the globe,” Schmidt said. “Truly, my sincere thanks goes to Dr. Hawkins for his faith in my abilities to lead this vital position in our university.”
