Students Excel at Photography Exhibit in Auburn |
The
work of two students in Troy State University's Department of Art and
Design have been accepted into the Photo V Juried Exhibition 2003 at
the Jan Dempsey Community Arts Center in Auburn.
Out of 141 submitted entries by 47 photographers, only 22 works
by 16 artists were accepted for display. TSU students David Noble of Alabaster
and Jayne Richards of Enterprise were two of only three university students from
Alabama and Georgia to have works accepted into the show. Noble was awarded the
top prize of the entire exhibit.
The majority of the photographs were traditional black-and-white
and color prints. The accepted works were chosen by Barbara Bondy, an assistant
professor of studio art and coordinator of exhibitions and lectures in the Department
of Art at Auburn University, and William White, editor of the Auburn Bulletin,
a weekly newspaper circulated in eastern Alabama.
“Any time that a student of ours has success in competitions
with other students, we are genuinely pleased,” said Jerry Johnson, chair
of the TSU Department of Art and Design. “However, in the case of Mr. Noble
winning the top award, even when competing with professional photographers from
Alabama and Georgia, we are ecstatic. This is just another indication of Mr.
Bob Joslin's instruction in photography and our aggressive philosophy in making
a difference in art and design education. I am also very proud of TSU student
Jayne Richards who had two photos accepted into this highly juried exhibition.”
David Noble's top-prize entry, “Trumpet Music,” won
the TSU junior a $125 cash prize.
“I photographed my roommate's brand-new trumpet,” Noble
said. “I didn't expect to win because it's the first competition I've ever
entered.”
Jayne Richards, a graphic design and advertising student,
had two out of three submitted works displayed at the exhibition, “House
of Praise” and “The Rower.” The color photographs were taken
in New Mexico and Boston respectively.
“It was a very high honor for me to be accepted into
the show,” Richards said. “The exhibit was such a high-class event.
Just to be in the presence of some of the other photographers was an honor,” Richards
added.
The photographs will become part of the Auburn Art Association's
Collection of Works on Paper.
