Win Big at the 2003 Alabama Conference Theatre |
Students of Troy State University's Department of Speech
and Theatre won awards for their production of “Antigone” at
the recent 2003 Alabama Conference of Theatre of the Kennedy Center
American College Theatre Festival held at Jacksonville State University.
Students presented Sophocles' “Antigone” in hopes of
advancing to regional competition. The 10-state region is one of eight that make
up the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival. After reviewing performances
from the eight regional competitions, judges from the Kennedy Center will select
six to be performed in Washington, D.C. in April at the annual non-competitive
national festival.
The Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival, founded
in 1969, also offers student artists individual recognition through awards and
scholarships in playwriting, acting, criticism, directing and design.
Three TSU students have been nominated for the Irene Ryan
scholarships. The $500 scholarships are funded through a foundation established
by the late actress best known for her portrayal of “Granny Clampett” on “The
Beverly Hillbillies,” and are awarded to the outstanding student performers
at each regional festival. The Foundation and the Kennedy Center Festival also
bring two regional winners and their acting partners from each of the eight regions
to Washington, D.C., to take part in an “Evening of Scenes” during
the national festival. At the national level, two performers will be awarded
additional $2,500 scholarships.
TSU students nominated for Irene Ryan scholarships are: Georgia
Mallory of Prattville; Bill Herring of Donalsonville, Ga.; and, Erin Turner of
Birmingham.
Drama students Georgia Mallory, Tommy Newman of Hawkinsville,
Ga., Courtney West of Daphne and Erin Turner were selected by the Southeastern
Theatre Conference Screening Auditions, with Jeff Watson of Albany, Ga. as an
alternate entry.
Students winning a $50 prize for their ACT Design Storm entries
are Marc Alewine of Montgomery and Lisa Michael of Troy for design and Georgia
Mallory for student directing.
Student costume designer Jessica Culpepper of Montgomery received
both a Barbizon nomination for costume design and the Lois Garren Award for Excellence
in Costume Design. Student composer Tommy Newman won a special Lois Garren Award
for Excellence in Music Composition.
