   TSU to honor 3 alumni, one honorary alumnus at homecoming
   Troy State University will honor three graduates and one special friend on Oct. 18, during the homecoming game against Florida International University.
   The Distinguished Alumni of the Year awards and Honorary Alumnus of the Year award will be given during halftime. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. at Movie Gallery Stadium. The award will be presented by Dr. Jack Hawkins, Jr., Chancellor, and Mickey Crew, president of the National Alumni Association Board of Directors.
   The recipients are Susan C. Delenne of Hayden, Randall Moore of Destrehan, La., and Hugh “Buzz” Phillips of Montgomery. The Honorary Alumnus of the Year is Gary L. Smith of Andalusia.The honorary alumnus award is given to a non-alumnus supporter of the university.
   Award recipients are chosen annually by a vote of the TSU National Alumni Association board, which solicits nominations from TSU alumni and the general public.The honorary alumnus award is given to a non-alumnus supporter of the university.
   “This is one of the biggest honors that an alumnus can receive,” said Faith Ward, director of Alumni Affairs. “This is across the board on a national scale.”
   The 2003 Distinguished Alumni of the Year recipients are:

   Susan C. Delenne of Hayden, is the Alagasco manager of communications since 1997. She graduated from TSU with a bachelor’s degree in Journalism in 1979.
   Delenne serves as media spokesperson for Alagasco and manages numerous special projects as well as other communications related duties. She was named Manager of the Year by Gas Industries Magazine. She was the charter president of TSU Greater Birmingham Area Alumni Chapter and charter member of the TSU Journalism Alumni Chapter, past president and board member.

    Randall Moore of Destrehan, La., is the president and owner of E.T.I., one of the largest staffing firms in the New Orleans area and National Contractor Services Company, Inc, which is an electrical contracting company.
   Moore is a 1978 TSU cum laude graduate with a bachelor’s degree in accounting.
   From 1988-1997 he served as the vice president of finance for A.M.E. INC., and from 1983-1988 he was the manager of audit department for Bruno and Tervalon, Certified Public Accountants. Moore was also a senior accountant for Ernst & Young.

   Buzz Phillips of Montgomery is the Director of Football, Basketball and Baseball Operations at TSU. Phillips is a 1969 graduate in education and coached 20 years of high school basketball before taking the coaching job at Huntingdon College in 1991. Phillips took a men’s basketball program that had been discontinued since 1979 and won the 2000-2001 National Small College Athletic Association Championship.
   He was recognized as the National Coach of the Year among NSCAA coaches by the Birmingham Tip-Off Club. Phillips is a member of the Greater Montgomery Area Alumni Chapter and is married to the former Nancy Hart also a TSU graduate (1971).

    Gary L. Smith of Andalusia is the Honorary Alumnus Award recipient. Smith is the CEO of Alabama Electric Cooperative Inc., and in that corporate role was a major supporter of the expansion of TSU’s football stadium.
   Smith is a 1979 graduate of Samford University’s Cumberland School of Law and is a graduate of the University of North Alabama in 1976 with degrees in accounting and economics.
