Tom Davis wins McKinley Award at Troy State University
Tom Davis, coordinator of University Relations at Troy State University and a TSU alumnus, is the winner of the Vergil Parks McKinley Award for September.
Davis, a 1981 TSU graduate and a university employee for five years, received the award during a ceremony in Hawkins-Adams-Long Hall of Honor on Tuesday, Sept. 23. Dr. Jack Hawkins Jr., Chancellor, presented the award to Davis, who was nominated by Dave Barron, Director of University Relations and Executive Assistant to the Chancellor.
The McKinley Award, the highest honor that TSU gives to a non-faculty staff member, is presented monthly to an employee who has demonstrated outstanding attitude, innovation and work ethic. The award was established by former Texaco CEO John McKinley in honor of his father, Vergil Parks McKinley, who was a TSU professor during the early 20th century and was key to the development of the university’s athletic program. Award winners receive an engraved clock and a $350 stipend.
The letter described Davis as a good representative for the university. “He is trusted to positively interact with a range of people from trustees to news media,” the letter said. “His insights and writing skills provide the foundation that allows for many dynamic presentations by the chancellor. These attributes are valuable to his department and the entire university system.”
Davis, who makes his home in Troy with his wife Deb, said he was extremely honored to receive the award.
“As a TSU alumnus, I have been associated with this university for 25 years,” Davis said. “Since I joined the TSU staff five years ago, I learned that working for your alma mater is special, because you are working for a cause that is intensely personal. I appreciate the McKinley Award because I know how many people we have on staff who love Troy State University and who deserve this award.”
