TSU graduate program in rehabilitation counseling earns specialized accreditation
One of Troy State University’s newest graduate programs, the master’s degree in rehabilitation counseling, has earned specialized accreditation status from a national organization.
The Council on Rehabilitation Education (CORE) recently notified Dr. Donna Jacobs, Dean of the College of Education, Dr. Dianne Gossett, Chair of the Department of Psychology, Counseling and Foundations of Education and Dr. Linda Williams, Assistant Professor of Education, of its decision to grant accreditation to the new program, which began offering classes in 2001.
CORE recognized the TSU rehabilitation counseling program as innovative, building “on departmental strengths that result in a program that is superior to many traditional rehabilitation counseling programs.”
Dr. Gossett said the CORE report praised TSU for its “strong and supportive relationship” with the Alabama Department of Rehabilitation Services, which includes internship opportunities for the student and for an active advisory committee composed of professionals in the field.
Dr. Williams said that the rehabilitation counseling degree program prepares counselors who provide services to assist individuals with disabilities to achieve their maximum potential. The primary focus is on employment readiness and work opportunities for the disabled.
“This is good news for the College of Education and for Troy State University,” Dean Jacobs said. “This special status reflects the hard work of so many people, particularly Dr. Gossett and Dr. Williams.”
